How’s this for a great example of people taking positive action to help overcome a problem? Three students from London College of Communication (LCC) saw the amount of unsold food that was being wasted by shops and restaurants in the city, and instead of just moaning about it, they decided to set up a charity to help get the food to those who needed it most.

Food for Good aims to reduce the amount of food waste by donating it to charities. They say, “Transporting the food from local restaurants to local charities won’t only avoid food going to landfill, but will help the charities in reaching out to homeless people and involving them as part of a community. Food waste is not only a social issue, but an environmental one: it affects everybody.”

Find out more about the idea at www.foodforgood.me and show your support on their Facebook page.

The supply of clean, safe drinking water to homes in Vietnam is being given a boost by Coca-Cola Vietnam’s $280,000 sponsorship of Clean Water for Communities projects around the country.

As part of projects carried out by UN-HABITAT (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) and CEFACOM (Centre for Research Family Health and Community), the money will help drill water wells, build water pipeline systems and install water filters for thousands of households. There’ll also be programmes to raise awareness of clean water resources and offer hygiene education.

“The local people in these areas can’t afford clean water for their daily use,” says Hoang Thuy Lan, Director of CEFACOM. “Therefore, this support is very meaningful to them.”

A lot of inventions and innovations are clever, useful and timesaving, but a very special few are truly lifesaving. To celebrate World Water Day, we thought it would be good to revisit Michael Pritchard’s inspirational TED talk from 2009.

The Lifesaver bottle, which he developed after watching the devastation caused by the twin tragedies of the Asian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina, is an incredible portable water filter that uses nano technology to make the most revolting water drinkable in seconds.

Watch and be inspired. And find out more about how you can help Lifesaver projects all over the world.

Not many of us can be lucky enough to witness first hand the wonders of some of the most remote parts of the planet. So it’s just as well there are people like Dayman Steptoe who spend the time capturing those wonders on film for the rest of us to enjoy.

It took the intrepid photographer more than a year to capture over 104,000 images which he then edited down to create a time-lapse film revealing the stunning secrets of the Australian outback.

Spectacular star-filled skyscapes, sun-scorched canyons, rolling rivers and flickering firelight – Steptoe’s film shows us some of the wonderful things happening in nature when most of us are looking the other way.

Forget headlines about global warming and articles on recycling, Italian artist, ecologist and sculptor Ivano Vitali has found a new way to get the sustainability message across using the news.

He uses only waste newspapers and magazines – no dyes, paint or glue – to create beautiful garments from mittens to high-fashion dresses. His method involves sorting found paper according to colour, then twisting strips together to make balls of paper ‘wool’ to then knit, crochet, weave and sew into all sorts of wearable items.

And although Vitali admits his clothes aren’t perhaps the most practical – you wouldn’t want to get caught wearing them in the rain! – they’re certainly a unique way to spread the word about the importance of reusing and recycling.

We’ve heard about lots of new developments in biofuel research, but this one’s our latest favourite: Scientists from Mississippi State University have discovered that panda poo could hold the answer to faster, cleaner and cheaper biofuels.

It’s long been suspected that animals like pandas, which eat giant amounts of tough plant matter every day, have bacteria in their digestive systems that are especially efficient at breaking down the cellulose in plants into nutrients. The hope is that those bacteria could make a big difference in the production of biofuels from tougher, non-food plants, like switchgrass, corn stalks and wood chips, rather than having to rely on precious food crops such as sugar or corn that are currently used for biofuels.

The scientists studied the fresh poo of a pair of pandas at Memphis Zoo for over a year and discovered that the bacteria contained powerful enzymes capable of breaking down plant material without the need for the high heat, harsh acids and high pressures currently used in biofuel production processes. That sounds like super panda power to us! What do you think?
